On March 13, 2013 Jorge Bergoglio was elected the 266th pope of the Catholic Church, taking the name Francis after St. Francis of Assisi. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he is the first Pope from the Americas, the first non-European and the first Jesuit to serve as the leader of the Catholic Church. His papacy has been characterized by his deep concern for the plight of the poor and his unusual simplicity.
